After reading about it in Sutherland’s Scrum book and, sequentially, reading the whole public Valve’s Employee Handbook, I feel like their work is actually much more general and important than people seem to believe. I even presented the idea to several managers I know and they all would give me the old “if fairy tales were true” type of answer, only to have their whole foundations shaken by knowing that the fairy tale did come true and is currently making millions of dollars more than they ever will.
The more impressive part in my opinion is how they manage to have the team itself to share the rewards of their product, something that has been a social disaster in my personal attempts, even with reasonable people. Not even mentioning the apparent psychological secrets they must have for selecting the employees. Does that system only work with top professionals? Only with “good” people? Is autocontrolled meritocracy only achievable in certain environments?
Where can I learn more about this topic? Does anyone know about a book dedicated to only Valve’s software management system? Can I just go to the Matrix and see it for myself?
Pardon my enthusiasm, but this has gone through me like the bible probably has to ancient peasants of the Middle East.
