Hey all, thanks in advance for the responses. I have recently been offered a promotion from a Help Desk position to a Developer position and I have a quick question about compensation. Please note; this developer position isn’t a coding position, it is developing custom solutions and workflows for businesses within an existing software. I am very exited about this opportunity, but I am a bit weary about the compensation offered. I would like some input as I assume some of you have probably made the transition from help desk to development yourselves.
I currently make 40k and with the promotion I have been offered 46k (15%). I do not believe this is market value for this position, or even close really. I do believe that I should get below market value as I have minor experience developing, although I have definitely proven competency in this field, but how much below market value is the question.
My question is; should I just accept this position no questions asked? 15% is quite a large bump in my current pay, and my company could have easily found someone outside that already has more experience than me, but they are committing to developing me. Should I try to negotiate more, stating that this is too far below market value for this position? Am I crazy in even questioning this and/or wrong to think that this position should pay more, especially having no prior formal development on my resume before this? It is a good stepping stone for sure.
I am more apt to go for the first option, as I believe if I prove myself the next year, I will have more ammunition during my next performance review to ask for a larger raise.
I apologize if my rambling confuses you, I am kind of processing as I’m typing.
