Opinion of github private repos

Hi everyone. I’m getting involved with a startup as a software engineer. I was wondering what is the general opinion on github private repos. Would you consider it safe/secure enough to version control code for commercial applications?

Are there any other free/low-cost solutions you would recommend for a startup?
