Software imitation? (question)

Im quite new to software dev, and was wondering if it is possible to i dont wanna say rip because that sounds bad but imitate a software that is already out and which i really like and only plan to use for personal use and never commercial. I was wondering if there was any way to see how a program was made and go off of that and try to build my own through that being as an influence?
